About Bedales School

Bedales is a leading co-educational day and boarding school for ages 3–18, set in the heart of the South Downs National Park in the south of England. Since 1893, the school has been at the forefront of evolving excellence in education thinking and practice and maintains its founding vision to educate the whole child, while continually adapting to meet the needs of a changing world. Students are encouraged to think for themselves, explore their passions and develop a genuine love of learning, becoming rounded learners as the result of a diverse, innovative curriculum that prioritises creativity, critical thinking and hands-on exploration in – and beyond – the classroom. Bedales’ 120-acre countryside campus and working farm nurture lifelong connections with the natural world, and the unique Outdoor Work curriculum is an indispensable part of school life, highlighted as a ‘significant strength’ in a recent ISI inspection. The school's founding motto, ‘work of each for weal of all’, is woven throughout daily life and each member of the Bedales community plays a role in shaping a thriving and purposeful environment in which to live and learn. Individuality, personal agency and collaboration are valued at all stages, with no uniform, first-name terms and integrated boarding just three features of an authentic and inclusive school community characterised by mutual respect and a deep sense of belonging. The school's own Bedales Assessed Courses (BACs) are recognised by universities and provide a more relevant, forward-thinking alternative to GCSEs in subjects such as Global Perspectives, Fashion Design and Sport Science. Bedales is known for its exceptional creative arts provision, with award-winning practical and performance spaces including a purpose-built Art and Design Building and oak framed theatre. Students develop the skills and self-confidence not just to succeed academically, but to lead fulfilling and meaningful lives and leavers go on to study at some of the most prestigious educational and artistic institutions globally, joining an active network of alumni who are distinctively Bedalian for life.

These figures tell you how much progress students who studied A levels at this school or college made between the end of key stage 4 and the end of their A level studies, compared to similar students across England. These scores are also known as 'value added' scores.

A score above zero means students made more progress, on average, than students across England who got similar results at the end of key stage 4. A score below zero means students made less progress, on average, than students across England who got similar results at the end of key stage 4.

Mobile phone policy

Mobile phone policy

Approach to mobile phone use at Bedales School.

True to Bedalian values, our aim isn't to ban phones outright, but to disrupt the habit of constant checking. We want students and staff to be more present and engaged with the rich academic, social and co-curricular life of the school they’re part of. As a community, we agreed: Blocks 3 and 4 (Years 9 & 10) - no mobile phones during the day. Block 5 (Year 11) - phones allowed but must be kept out of sight and placed in designated phone boxes during lessons. Sixth Form and staff - phones permitted but must remain out of sight during the day.
